CZP'S Match The Book To Holiday Contest

Nothing says 'the holidays' like a book from ChiZine Publications.

In honour of Valentine's Day, we're launching a contest where you match our first thirteen titles to holidays. For example, Monstrous Affections is best summed up by Valentine's Day.

The Contest

Take the list of books below, tell us which holiday relates to it, and send your answers to holidaycontest@chizinepub.com with the subject Holiday Contest Submission.

The first person to guess eleven (or more) of the thirteen wins the grand prize.

If no one wins the grand prize, we will publish the holiday-book combinations just about everyone guessed correctly and open up another two-week round of submissions, but the threshold will go up to twelve correct guesses.

If there's still no grand prize winner, again we'll publish an updated list of universally correct answers and will go again, but the threshold is all thirteen holidays.

If there is still no winner, we'll figure something out.

Deadline

Deadline for the first round is midnight (EST) on February 28, 2010.

Second round will be midnight (EST) on March 14, 2010.

Third round will be midnight (EST) on March 28, 2010.

Prizes

Grand Prize

Grand Prize winner gets their choice of:

  • A free CZP trade paperback
  • Short story critique (up to 3,000 words) by CZP Assistant Editor Helen Marshall

Secondary Prizes

Secondary Prize is a free eBook of your choice.

There are two ways to win a Secondary Prize.

  • Get almost all the answers correct, but not quite. However, you really need to stand out from the crowd.
  • Have some holidays that are not correct, but make us burst out laughing.

Secondary prizes are handed out solely at the discretion of CZP.

Rules and Hints

  1. Only one submission per email address per round.
  2. No holiday is used more than once, but remember that two holidays can happen on the same date.
  3. "Holiday" has a broad meaning. They could be religious, country-specific, or an observance of some annual event. But, they are probably things that you'd find on a calendar. If you ask yourself "Does this count as a holiday?", it probably does.
  4. We've avoided super-obscure holidays, but there might be some less known than others.
  5. Each holiday is a single day, so there are no "Week of *************". However, the first day of some week-long observances might be considered a holiday in the broad meaning we're using.
  6. You don't need to have read the books to guess the holiday, but the covers, titles, descriptions and (for collections) story titles hold clues. But some holidays might relate to the story's title, others to the cover, and so on.
  7. Monstrous Affections' holiday is Valentine's Day. Honest. Get that one wrong and we're tossing your ballot.
  8. Halloween is not one of the holidays. Too easy.
