Rachel Ayers lives and writes in Kansas, from whence she hopes to hitch a tornadic ride to adventure in another world. She has a Creative Writing degree from Pittsburg State University. Her story "Job Hunting" won First Prize in the 2010 HarperCollins Radiant Prose contest, and her novelette "Sister and Serpent" won Honorable Mention in the L. Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future Contest. Her blog is at richlayers.livejournal.com. Coyote at the Crossing

Coyote watches the wall.

The wall is two stories high, concrete, and topped with razor wire. Security cameras perch atop it like fat birds. The entire edifice is a canvas for graffiti artists, adorned with weeping Christs, crosses, angry Spanish bubble letters, intricate desert totem guardians against the insanity of a country being walled in—or out.
